Music critics certainly have applauded the album saying:

TALL GRASS & COOL WATER is a musical tribute to the culture, history, intrigue and stories of the west. Every buckaroo with some nostalgia for the prairie needs to corral a copy of this album. The bluegrass instrumentation is as blue and big as the Texas sky, and the cowboy songs are perfect for listening to around the campfire after a long day on the trail.” Joe Ross (CD Insight, Roots Music Report).

“Once again, Murphey has released an album that serves as a history lesson, but one that you’ll look forward to taking!” – Music News Nashville

“Michael Martin Murphey has created a sub-genre of bluegrass that he calls Buckaroo Bluegrass.  Basically, it is cowboy music with a bluegrass beat.  If you like both cowboy music and bluegrass, you should really like this.” – Owensboro-Messenger Inquirer

“The Smithsonian should create a medal for artists like Michael Martin Murphey. He has earned himself a distinct place in country music history with his albums that almost singlehandedly keep the cowboy song alive. The music he makes, the stories and language that music preserves, and the true spirit of the cowboy culture that he carries on, is an achievement as great as any in modern times.  With his new release Tall Grass & Cool Water, he continues to explore the connection between cowboy and bluegrass music; these songs are cowboy in theme, yet played in a bluegrass style.” Parcbench

“Tall Grass & Cool Water is a marriage made in heaven.” – Post Gazette (MA)

“On TALL GRASS & COOL WATER, Michael Martin Murphey proves again that he is one of the original stars.   His bluegrass sound is at once gradiose, warm and optimistic.  One of the best albums of the year!” – John Shelton Ivany – JS Top 21

New music from Michael Martin Murphey

Rural Rhythm Records is very proud to announce the brand new single, “The Ballad Of Jesse James” by multi-award winning and Bluegrass Grammy® nominated artist, Michael Martin Murphey. The song is from the upcoming album, TALL GRASS & COOL WATER releasing June 28, 2011.

“The Ballad of Jesse James” includes the talents of Michael Martin Murphey (lead vocals / rhythm guitar); Pat Flynn (lead /acoustic guitar); Ryan Murphey (mandolin); Troy Engle (fiddle / banjo); and Mike Bubb (upright bass.)

The song is part of a “James Gang Trilogy” feature on the album along with “The Ballad of Cole Younger,” and “Frank James Farewell.”  This public domain ballad was supposedly written by Billy Gashade, but his identity if a mystery. The song is a parody of “Rally ‘Round the Flag,” a popular Union anthem during the Civil War. Jesse and Frank James grew up on a prairie farm near Kearney, Missouri. They became the most notorious outlaws in American history, and were compared to Robin Hood by Confederate loyalist after the Civil War.

“The Ballad of Jesse James” now available to radio stations via AirplayDirect.com. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements on TALL GRASS & COOL WATER as Murphey and his Buckaroo Blue Grass friends ride again. This new project no doubt continues the important connection between bluegrass music and cowboy music that began with the first BUCKAROO BLUE GRASS album and continued with last year’s Grammy® nominated BUCKAROO BLUE GRASS II album.

Michael Martin Murphey’s “Buckaroo Blue Grass II: Riding Song”

Michael Martin Murphey and his Buckaroo Blue Grass friends ride again on the February 9, 2010 album release ofBUCKAROO BLUE GRASS II: Riding Song.  The album expands on his passions of his Grammy nominated album, “BUCKAROO BLUE GRASS,” creating fully acoustic bluegrass versions of songs about the region to which Murphey has been deeply connected for a lifetime – the American Southwest.

The high lonesome sound in bluegrass music has always appealed to the cowboy soul. Somehow the acoustic instruments used in bluegrass have a drive, energy and expansive quality – an almost mystical “wide open country” sort of feeling that seems built into the design. You can hear and feel it on Rob Ickes‘ country sound in the new version of “Wildfire. It seems the American West has produced “running-wide-open” acoustic musicians like Pat Flynn, Sam Bush, Rob Ickes and Ryan Murphey who have been key in developing the Buckaroo Blue Grass sound as they blaze a trail connecting Cowboy and Western music to Bluegrass by exploring Wild West sonic spaces.
